4. Ask employees to put forward their own ideas by introducing simple suggestion schemes for things like maintaining engagement, winning new business or reducing costs.  Recognise the best ideas through your usual communication channels and with a personal acknowledgement from the boss.

5. Celebrate your successes, however small.  Take time to acknowledge achievement and recognise progress.  Even in the toughest times, people still win/keep business; receive thanks from customers; overcome challenges; win awards; pass exams and run marathons.  Focus on team as well as individual achievements, as during a down turn it is more important than ever for everyone to pull together.

6. Provide details of financial and/or counselling organisations which offer help and advice to members of staff who may be feeling the ‘pinch’ with their own personal finances.  Tesco, for example, has this month issued all 280,000 UK staff with a Financial Services Authority guide to personal finance
